Chapter history
Sidney Tolbert Buie was born on January 24, 1896. His father and mother were M.D. Buie and Lena Buie. He was one of ten children born at the family home about two miles south of Ashland, Texas. He attended public schools at Ashland and entered the Army in 1918. He served in the Cavalry and Field Artillery as First Sergeant of his company. When World War I ended, he began his first teaching job in Graceton, Texas. Mr. Buie taught there for three or four years.
On August 14, 1921, S.T. Buie and Blanch Moore were married. S.T. Buie taught in the public schools at Graceton, Union Ridge, and New Diana in Upshur County; Pine Tree in Gregg County; and Cumby in Hopkins County. At Pine Tree and New Diana, he served as Superintendent of Schools.
S.T. Buie was a dedicated teacher and school superintendent. He was mourned by many people when he died on December 2, 1972. He was buried in Ashland Cemetery near his boyhood home. He was a devoted husband and father, a Mason, and member of First Baptist Church Diana. In fact, he donated the land for the First Baptist Church and the New Diana Independent School District. He set a wonderful example for many students and teachers in the school districts where he served. It’s little wonder that New Diana High School chose many years ago to name its National Honor Society in memory of Sid T. Buie.
